'Hiraeth' is a word in Welsh that is difficult to define (and, it is often said, untranslatable) It is longing for something no longer
obtainable perhaps, that brings on a particular melancholy. It is an emotion that runs continuously through Welsh poetry from the 6th century on. A grieving ache caused by loss and defeat, as much as homesickness and the grief of the lovelorn.
There are other languages that have similar words, and some are included in this image, along with several poems that attempt (In Welsh) to define it..
